Yes, all thoughts of keeping an updated blog since last April have of course flown out the window.  No longer will I promise to keep anything updated as long as I'm in school.  Summer has come and gone and I'm back in classes once more.  Math (of course), English and Photography (again).  The first because let's face it, I think I will always be taking math, the second because I need it to achieve my general associates and the last because I have a lot of printing that I need to do and this is the easiest and cheapest way to go about it!  Seriously!

I've went off of my antidepressants.  The reason why I went on them 5 years ago no longer holds true so I figure it's time to live life without them again.  I'm doing well, although I'm hoping my anxiety doesn't get the best of me.  I worry.  I fret.  It's who I am.

The kids are all doing great.  Emily and Mary are both getting older and it hurts my heart to see them so stiff legged and not well.  This past summer we thought we'd do Emily a favor and buy her a little wading pool and she ADORED it.  However I was neglectful and never dried her ears out after she went swimming and now she has a raging infection in one of them.  Of course I discover this tidbit on the Friday afternoon BEFORE a long holiday weekend so the next available appt was for Wednesday afternoon.  I feel absolutely terrible for letting it get as bad as it is.  She never complains about it so I never suspected…and who lifts their doggies ear up on a regular basis to peer inside?  So she's in a world of discomfort right now and I feel so bad because of it.

The kitties are awesome….all 7 of them although I think I need to figure out a different way of feeding Miss Athena upstairs because she's in such a small room all the time she doesn't get as much exercise as she needs and so she's getting a couple extra unneeded pounds on her.  I don't like abusing my critters in the manner in which I myself am afflicted so I'm researching on the best way to handle that.  Maybe a different kitty food and only feeding twice daily.  We'll see.

So that's that.  I guess my life is pretty dull and therefore doesn't really NEED a lot of updates at the moment.  Maybe someday.

So much has happened since I last checked in.  Well, it seems to me that so much has happened but to others it's probably just another day...

Kurt and I bought a house.  It's adorable, it was well in our price range and the backyard is HUGE for the kids.  Best of all, we're saving over $300/month in mortgage payments as opposed to what we were paying for rent.  Gotta like that!

The downside is that it's a fixer upper.  Not really a DOWNside so much as its a work in progress.  The walls all throughout need to be painted, that's on the top of the priority list.  As well as adding an additional power outlet in each room.  It's an old house, built in 1949, so it's original wood flooring and quirky doors and such but the best part is that it's ours.

We've also added 5 (yes 5) kittens to our family.  It started out with the 2 that I kept that I fostered last summer, and they're almost 6 months old now...and then I temp fostered 5 kittens in December and we had to keep 3 of them (we wanted to keep them all but we just couldn't).  So now we've got 5 kittens all under 6 months.  2 are almost 6 mths and 3 are 8 weeks.  ALL of them are freakin' adorable.  And, since I've handraised them all, from bottlefeeding every 2 hours 24/7 to teaching them to eat solids and use the litter box, I'm mommy to them...they're lap kitties and love snuggles.  I adore them.  :)

Mary and Emily still aren't getting along so we're not even trying to push it with them.  We keep them separated at all times now, which means that we'll need to put off fostering children until (god forbid) one of them crosses the rainbow bridge.  We can't have any accidents with leaving doors open or whatnot.  We switch days as to who gets to spend the majority of the daytime in the main part of the house and who's separated...they both get time in the main part during the day but we switch them out so that they get time with not just me but Kurt, too.

The new semester is starting now.  With buying a house and all last semester I was just not very present at all in my brain so hoping that this coming one will go over better for me.  This semester I didn't get to class sign ups in time so I'm taking math (of course), which I've already taken but I'm re-taking it so that I'm better able to grasp the concepts.  I tried taking the next class but I was so lost and ended up dropping it.  I'm also taking 2 art classes.  I know, I know.  Ceramics, which I hate, and Advanced Digital Photography.  It should be an interesting semester!

Something else that is happening for us is that Kurt and I signed up with Big Brothers Big Sisters so we'll be getting our "Littles" in a couple of weeks after our FBI checks come back.  Can't be too careful when it comes to working with kidgets.  We're really excited to work with kids who need a good role model and mentor.

Have you ever wondered what your life would have been like had you taken a right instead of a left?  Went straight instead of turned around?  Took one job offer instead of another?

I'm involved these days with dog rescue and transport and fostering.  I'm still volunteering at the SPCA but it's not as often due to my new interests!  I probably make a couple trips each month to Battle Mountain to pull doggies on death row and bring them back to either temp foster or hand off to a new foster family.  It's a satisfying way to feel as though I'm doing something good for the critters out there.

Unfortunately, our newest member that we adopted after my first trip out there has a fascination like you wouldn't believe for birds.  It ended up as Daisy's demise as Mary got a hold of her purely accidentally and killed our birdie.  :(  We've been without Daisy for about 3 weeks now and we still cry when we think about her.  I miss my baby birdie girl.

That being said, it's July now.  And with July in the desert comes high temps.  It just makes me glad we don't live down in Southern NV.  I don't think we'd be able to survive without A/C down there.  It's bad enough up here!  The dogs are listless during the day and perk up in the evening when it gets cooler outside.  Shoot, if it weren't for creepy crawlies outside I'd camp out with blankets at night!  But I don't have a hankering for sleeping with earwigs or firebugs.  Bleh.

I had typed up a big ol' update a few days ago and then my program crashed and I lost it.  Ugh.  So here I go again.
Firstly, let me apologize for disappearing as I have.  It's been a crazy past couple of months.  Seriously.  I'm not making that up!
The Spring semester has ended and I'm in my 2nd week of summer break.  I'm so stoked for this break.  I thought math was going to break me, I swear!  I thought last semester was rough, well kick it up a few notches and that's the difficulty of this last class.  And it's only going to get worse!  I'll be living at the tutoring center in the Fall; that'll be that.
Of course I did swell in both my Writing Fiction and Digital Photography class.  I've got some great photos that I need to put into frames and hang up now.  We're talking some kickass pictures!  Not because of the class...but because I had time to actually go through pics from the past year and print them out in class.  So nice when you have a great photo printer worth thousands of buckeroos at your disposal!
As far as weight loss goes...the plateau that I'd hit really hit me hard.  Not only was I not losing weight, but I was losing momentum in a big way.   I was trying not to, but when you don't lose for well over a month, you lose steam.  Needless to say, I fell into the typical rut that those who lose weight fall into for a while.  It didn't help with all of the stress going on from school and such, either, and I easily started to give a day up here and there with exercise...until finally I wasn't exercising at all.  NOT GOOD when trying to lose weight.
No fear, fellow fatties, I'm back.  Well, technically I never left, but I'm back for a few months again.  Regularly until school's back in again.  You know how it goes.  I'm back on the treadmill daily.  Forcing myself to not take Sundays off again so that I get back into the habit again.  When I feel I'm good and ready, I'll give myself that one day off again.  Until then...I'm full force and gung-ho.  It's not fair that us fatties have to always worry about falling off of the wagon, so to speak.  No matter if we reach our goal...we always have to be in hyper-awareness mode of what we're eating, how much, and when....we will never be free from being fat, not really.  Not fair at all.  In fact, it downright sucks.  I want to be one of those people with the magic metabolism.  Of course I will never be...so here I am, doing what I can with what I've got.
Still no work to be found and we're entering summer where the pickings are slim in the bank, as well.  We're usually tight during the summer until my first part of my student loan comes through.  I really wish I could find SOMETHING.  I am trying to keep busy in the meantime.  I'm still volunteering a lot at the SPCA, we're in the process of moving to a new location.  Bigger and better.  Yay!  I'm also involved in animal transport and have done a few of those now, as well.  Which leads me to my next big news...
K and I would love to introduce you to our new family member...merry Mary.
DSCN4664 DSCN4829-copy
She's part Chow-Chow part Golden Retriever.  She's got the sweet and loving personality of a Golden, and the fluffiness of a Chow.  We couldn't have been more lucky in a new family member.  She's Emily's age, 11 years, and so she's old and creaky.  Her hips are not what they used to be, I'm sure, and she stumbles or loses her balance from time to time...but she's got lots of kisses and love for anyone she meets and Emily and Peaches are slowly getting used to having her as part of our family.  Mary came into our lives through my transporting some doggies from Battle Mountain County Animal Shelter which is about a 3 hour drive East of Reno.  I didn't leave home expecting to be bringing home a new family member...but she was going to be put down if I didn't pull her, and nobody's shown any interest at all in her being's that she was so old.  K and I have a soft spot for older doggies...they need a loving home in their final years.  That's the least that we can do for them.  So Mary came home with me, along with the two other dogs that I was transporting.  We took her to the vet within a day of her arrival and she got all of her shots and then took her to the groomer where she was thinned out and shampooed.  After that, it was like her entire demeanor went from blue to perky.  She literally prances and dances and shakes her head in joy.  She's such a blessing to us...and will continue to be so.
So that brings me to today.  Now.  Things are pretty much the same as usual.  K celebrated his 51st birthday and so we had a dinner/movie date...something that we haven't done for months and months since there's just not money for that kind of thing.  It was nice to get out with my sweetie pie and just be together without worrying about the kids.
So that's what's been happening with me.  As I mentioned, now that it's Summertime, I will be updating on a more regular basis again.

I have a friend in one of my classes who has a small chihuahua that has been ill for the past several weeks. The chi is old (around 14, I believe) and was vomiting, and yelping in pain every time he was touched. He could barely move. Obviously the first thought is maybe it's his time.

The thing is is that she isn't established at any veterinarian. She said that her dogs have never been sick so why should she bother taking them to the vet? Now, maybe it's because I feel that my babies are my babies, and not mere animals, so I'm always taking them in for their yearly shots/check-ups, etc. Maintenance is the best care there is when it comes to both humans AND critter kids. I visit my doctor every 3 months so she can monitor my weight loss and blood pressure. It's just the way it is. Often we're short on cash (more often than not!) and are unable to afford other various things at the time of the check-up...so we end up buying cheaper food (or just not as much that month) so that we have extra to take the babies to the vet (or to see the doctor ourselves).

I don't understand when others don't do the same. If it were a human child, would you neglect taking it in every year for shots and the check-ups? No! Why on earth would you do that for a critter baby?

So needless to say, she was basically forcing this poor little chi to suffer in pain and agony simply because she didn't have any money to take him in. Now, my vet knows us by now, after seeing us every year and whenever there's something that's come up, so we're established with her, and they work with us with payments, etc. when we're unable to pay it all at once. We'll usually give her what we can and then pay the rest off when K gets paid or a school loan comes in. But asking a vet who doesn't know you from Joe Blow across the street to allow you to make payments is ridiculous!

Another friend of mine has a cat who is urinating blood. At the simplest, it's a UTI, at worst it could be any number of things! Both he and his husband aren't working, he is bringing in unemployment, and they are unable to take her to the vet. So this poor kitty is having to suffer because of their ineptness.

I understand not having money. I've been unemployed for going on 2 years now, I'm a student, and we're only making our way on K's checks. We're poorer than we've ever been in my life. But we have NEVER made a concession in our pet's behalf if shots or health care were needed. We do what we need to do in order to get them taken care of. It's just who we are.

I guess what I'm saying is...if you can't afford to care for your pet(s) on a daily/weekly/yearly/emergency basis, then PLEASE find someone else who can. Don't assume that because your pet has never been sick that you don't need to take them in. How do you know it hasn't been sick? Have they told you?

Do you take your pet in for shots/check-ups on a yearly basis? Emergencies? Or do you fall into the category that my two friends do?

I'm not here to bash on anyone. I'm just very frustrated that people do this sort of thing. I'd love to hear your input, for or against this topic. Please, discuss in the comments!

Volunteering

I've started volunteering at the SPCA in Reno. I really enjoy it so far and am able to finally get my cat fix in since K's allergic and we can't have one of our own. The dogs are awesome to play with and walk and the atmosphere there is hopeful. I enjoy being there...and I feel like I'm actually doing something good with the time that would otherwise be spent playing online or worrying about money!

This particular little lady has captured my heart. Her name is Fuzz and she loves to snuggle and be close. She eventually took a cat nap laying back in my arms, cradled like a baby.

Emily's lump is nothing to be concerned about!  I took her to the vet today and they did a biopsy and it's only a fatty nodule.  I guess a lot of older dogs get them.  She's only got the one.  The vet said there was no reason to have it removed.  Yay!!!

I was so relieved to hear her tell me that.  SO relieved.  Phew!!!  That's one big ol' worry off my chest, right there.

I knew my E-dawg was healthy!  I just KNEW it!!

Funny, that saying is supposed to be prefaced by breast...not dog.  But dog, it is.  I discovered it a few months back and it was about the size of a dime.  Now it's the about the size of a quarter.  I'm worried.  I'm not ready to lose my doggy, yet!  I fell asleep crying last night...worried about her.  Thinking about losing her.  I know it comes with the territory....but dammit, I'm not ready, yet.  I'm just not.  She needs to be with us for a while, yet.  Besides...she still acts like she's fine.  So, she probably is.  I'm hoping.

She's got a vet appointment on Thursday to have it looked at.  I'll worry about money then.

Right now....she gets queen's treatment around here.  Wait...she always gets that!

Sunday, July 11, 2010

A few months ago I found a lump on Emily's side.  It feels like a cyst-like thing...but more solid.  I don't think cysts are solid.  And it feels like it's getting bigger.

Problem....we can't afford to take her to the vet to have it looked at.  Not until my first student loan comes.  I don't know what to do.  :(

So I'm curious

So I'm curious....what do you feel is the best small to medium companion size dog?

You know we have Peaches...who is considered toy size because she is under 10 lbs.  We don't plan to adopt another animal anytime soon but I'm curious to know what you prefer when it comes to small dogs.

Do share your thoughts!

Other than a decidedly awesome song called Unwell (thank you, Matchbox 20)...I am decidedly unwell.

Yesterday evening I had a low calorie green bean casserole for dinner, not remembering that all of the previous times that I'd had it I'd gotten decidedly unwell.  This time was no different.

And so...

From about 10pm on since last night I've had a terribly upset stomach, mega diarrhea that also has the decidedly UNWELL color of black to it!  I know this is too much info but hey, what else am I going to amuse myself with?  I had the last of the pepto last night as well as a Tylenol PM (just one...more than that knocks me out for a week!)  I've sat on the toilet so many times with my book (I'm certainly not going in there without one!) wondering if I was going to puke, as well.  Listening to the sounds of my poor, churning tummy being unhappy about being decidedly unwell.

The upside to being decidedly unwell?  With my body emptying everything in its decidedly unwell system I'm probably also losing a few pounds.  Figures it takes being decidedly unwell to lose it!

So I slept until about 2pm after many interruptions from the mini dog and one decidedly cold and wet nose pushed into my face at least once from big dog.  I ate top ramen because, after doing internet research on decidedly dark diarrhea, it is salty and easy on my system.  Now I'm reclining back in my recliner with mini dog on my lap sharing space with my laptop with a decidedly unwell tummy still making churny noises.  I don't feel good.  I don't want to be awake.  I want to go back to bed and feel sorry for myself for being decidedly unwell.

So here we are almost at mid-term again.  Good heavens, where does the time go???  My first math test is on Wednesday and I think I'll do ok.  I'm thinking positively...that's where it begins.  My English class has been a lot of fun so far...the teacher is amazing and the topics we've had to write about are just awesome.  Recently we're working on our 2nd writing assignment and I knew mine was strong but to hear the feedback from the class today was nice.

I've been cleansing today...never a fun ordeal but I've felt as though I've needed it for a few weeks now.  I ran out of the cleansing juice after my 2nd week so I've went without for about 3 weeks now.  It was time!

Kurt's decided to blog again...about some really fun stuff.  So if you haven't been following his blog be sure to do so.  You can find the link on the left side of my blog under Fave Blog links...his blog is called Something/Anything?  He's such a talented writer and I love reading his stuff because he makes me laugh so darn much!

Yesterday we went grocery shopping...a tedious chore that must be done.  You should have seen me reaching to the top shelf for a can of plain almonds.  Of COURSE it was on the top shelf...and of COURSE I couldn't reach them!  And of COURSE Kurt was in the next aisle over looking for something else on the list.  So I stood on my very tippy toes (which isn't far with all the weight I'm carrying) and streeeetched my hand up.  There were 4 cans stacked one on top of the other and so I grabbed the bottom one and verrrry carefully lowered it down to where I could take the top one off of the stack and then very carefully put them all back up onto the top shelf.  I was impressed that I could actually do all of that without dropping anything!  Ahhh the drawbacks of being short.

I took the dogs to their vet appointment a few days ago and was told (I already knew) that Peaches needs to lose a pound or two.  She's got love handles where there needs to be ribs.  So we've been trying to feed them twice a day, morning and evening, out of separate bowls.  Peaches gets only 1/4 cup of food each time.  I was worried about  her because for a while she wasn't eating...but we've found our rhythm.  Phew!  They also both got their shots and Peaches got a mani/pedi done.  MUCH needed!  Her nails were starting to split... :(

Anyway that's all for now...till next time...don't eat any chopped  liver.  Not only does it taste disgusting but it looks disgusting, too!

What a week

With this new semester comes a LOOOOOT of homework!  Math, English and Diversity.  I've already done one English paper, I have math every night and I took a diversity test on Thursday.  Needless to say, this semester is a lot more intense than last.  But I have confidence in myself.

I've been making a few new friends in school, too.  Always nice to have since it's my only mode of socialization.

I've been doing my Isagenix over the past week.  It began with the two days of cleansing...then 5 days of the shakes...now I'm on my last day of cleansing.  I've been sticking right to it so here's hoping the scale is nice to me tomorrow!  Crossing my fingers.

Nemo's hatchday was 2 days ago on the 11th and he turned 10 years old.  We sang him happy hatchday and gave him some extra nutriberries.

Tomorrow is Valentines day and surprisingly my husband remembered!  We're going to go to Olive Garden for their soup and salad tomorrow for lunch and then have a few errands to run.  Should be a fun day.

Age happens

Watching my 9 year old retriever heave herself up to her feet to go outside and seeing her limping from stiff joints brings home the fact that she won't be with us a whole lot longer.  Her breed isn't known for long-term lives.  We tend to grow extremely attached to our pets and make them more family than some of our own human relatives.  And that's the way it should be.  It breaks my heart to know that someday she won't be with us anymore.

And then I start thinking about how time marches on whether we want it to or not.  Time.  Wow.  I swear it was just a few years ago that I was ten years old and entering fifth grade.  Where did it go???  And forget the fact that the years these days pass more and more fast.  Wasn't it just xmas a few months ago???  And here we are just a few months from it again!  Summers are shorter (at least it seems that way), winters are longer.  And life...continues to happen.

Going back to school was one of the greatest decisions that I could have made and I'm absolutely loving it and my classes.  I'm looking forward to having a career eventually instead just a job.  I'm looking forward to knowing that I'll be happy with my life.  I'm looking forward to having steady and good income...and vacations!  In this respect...I sure wish time would move faster...because I want to get on with living!

I'm such a staunch advocate of adopting our pet family members.  Whether it's from a private party or an organization like the Humane Society or various other animal rescues.  We adopted both of our dogs and we haven't been happier with our choices.

The above is Emily.  She's a flat-coated retriever.  We adopted her shortly after her first birthday from the local humane society.  We'd showed up there looking for a small to medium size dog and found her.  I still remember walking the aisles and seeing all those dogs with the sad eyes...and she was cowering in the corner looking so sad.  We both fell instantly in love with her.  We almost didn't get to adopt her, though, because when the HS called our landlady to see if we could bring her home with us she told them no and that she didn't want a dog that big at our home.  We were so sad.  We had to say goodbye to her...and it ws such a terrible feeling because we KNEW she was supposed to be a member of our family.  You see...she'd already had three homes before us.  She'd been abused and was very shy and skittish around people.  Nothing breaks our heart more than a dog with an abusive background.  But say goodbye we did.  When we got home we had a message from the HS saying that our landlady had called them back and said that it was ok.  Apparently she's a sucker for a homeless doggy, too!  It was already too late to return that same day so we had to wait overnight.  By the time we got there after work the next day we were so excited!  We've had Emily since late 2001 and our lives have been completely blessed by having her in our lives.

This is Peaches.  She's the newest edition to our family and I adopted her last December from a private party.  She was 11 months old and had already had a litter of pups.  Needless to say shortly after I brought her home I had her spayed.  I don't want to build the pet population when there are plenty of pets who already need homes.  She's a Chix (Chihuahua mix).  I adopted her when I was still living out of state and really needed a lap dog to help me get through my extreme depression.  She did the trick.  She's always so happy and bouncy and funny.  She makes me laugh so much.  We're so much better with her in our lives.

Adopt...don't buy.  Please!  You won't regret it!

Monday, August 3, 2009

So this totally awesome job came up on Craigs List for an adoption counselor at the humane society about a week and a half ago.  So, of course I sent in my email.  I mean, it's totally perfect for me.  It was listed for part time hours and with animals.  I'm studying to be a vet. tech. so PERFECT for me!

So I sent in an email and didn't hear anything back.  So Friday afternoon I sent an email to them asking if they'd received my resume and cover letter and the following day I was asked to come in this morning for an interview.  I was stoked!  So today's interview went really well.  Tomorrow I'll be going in at 10:30-7pm to do a shadow shift where I'll hang out with another adoption counselor to see what the basic day to day is like, etc.  I'm really excited.  I really hope this works out for me because it's just perfect.  The only drawback is the pay.  It's minimum wage.  I've never have a minimum wage job in 20 years.  LOL.  But it's more than I'm bringing in now which is absolutely NOTHING.

The good thing about it all is that animals don't care if you're fat or thin.  They just want to be loved.  And I definitely have plenty of that.  And I'd get to work with the public in a special time of their life...adopting an animal to become part of their family!  How freakin' cool is that????

I'll keep you updated!

So tomorrow night I will be embarking on my first Amtrak adventure to Reno.  I'm writing this now because I have no idea how much time I will have tomorrow afternoon after work to worry about entering another blog.  That's not to say that I may not create an entry from there...but I'm not planning on taking my laptop along so that's that.

I miss my husband, my pets...(even though I'll be leaving Peaches behind and missing her terribly).  I'll be having a lot of fun just being with my husband and celebrating our 8th anniversary (as of today!)

So here I sit...pondering over just how to pack the big ass suitcase full of stuff that I don't use here so that I can get it back to Reno.  Moving back one big suitcase at a time!

Oh...I can't forget my drugs.  God help me if I forget my anti-depressants and blood pressure meds.  I think I'd worry myself to death!  Haha!

Stinky dog

So my chihuahua has been going into the depths of the backyard and coming back inside smelling like something ripe and rotten!  I'm not sure where she goes to roll...but it's a hideous smell.  I'm almost afraid to know...but I need to go scout the yard to find whatever it is.  I can't be giving her baths every day!  She does love getting them but it's harsh on her skin to be getting them daily.  Besides...I think at one point or another she probably got some water in one of her ears and now it's bugging her.  I'm going to wait another day and see if it gets any better.  If it doesn't then a trip to the vet is in order.

If it isn't one thing it's another.  We just had my other dog, a flat-coat retriever, in the vet a couple of months ago for pancreatis.  She had an overnight stay and we were pretty worried about her.  And at the beginning of the year I had my chihuahua in to get spayed.  I think this is what pet insurance is for.  But it's one of those things you always think about getting after the fact.
